I’ll shortly touch some elements of legal basis or power of ombudsman
in Latvia then I will show you some elements of our activities and some
also practical elements. So, legal base as ombudsman law was enacted
on January 1 2007 when the Ombudsman institution of the Republic
st
of Latvia was established and the ombudsman office is the only
national human rights institution as well as ombudsman institution
and equality body in Latvia. Actually we are all in one like in many
other countries. Little bit about power or ombudsman elected by the
parliament of the republic of Latvia independent in fulfilment of his
functions subject only to law cannot be influenced that in fulfilment on
his functions and tasks, term of office is 5 years.
Little bit about guarantees of independence of the ombudsman and I
will mention only some few for instance free from political influence,
administratively punishable only with a consent of parliament, immunity
from criminal prosecutions, the term of office doesn’t coincidence with
the term of office of the parliament and very important is mentioned
that at the moment we have discussions about different nomination
procedure for the candidate. Currently it is driven by five deputies,
Member of Parliament for discussions it is our suggestion and perhaps
should be the president or the chairman of constitutional court, but it
is ongoing discussions.

population. Here you can see the dynamic of verification procedures
initiated at the ombudsman office regarding relation of the rights
of disabled persons. This chart shows statistics on the verification
procedures where you can see the number of established relations as
well as terminated procedures and procedures in action.
